What Is GHK-Cu? The Science Behind Evolv Grow

Authored by

If you’ve spent any time researching hair growth, chances are you’ve come across the term GHK-Cu. It’s become one of the most talked-about molecules in the hair health world, appearing in everything from topical serums to injectable peptide discussions. But what exactly is GHK-Cu? Why has it generated so much excitement? And what inspired Evolv to create its own next-generation biomimetic technology, EV2 Peptide™?

Let’s break down the science.

First, What Is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring complex composed of the tripeptide GHK (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine) and copper (Cu²⁺). One of the unique features of GHK is its dual functionality—it serves as both a signaling peptide and a carrier peptide, working together with copper to support healthy aging and the maintenance of healthy hair and skin.

GHK as a Signaling Peptide

As a signaling peptide, GHK helps coordinate the body's natural repair and renewal processes. Through its effects on cellular communication and gene expression, GHK supports the production of key structural components and helps maintain healthy skin, connective tissues, and hair follicles. GHK helps support these processes by:

  • Promoting collagen and extracellular matrix production for skin structure and resilience

  • Supporting tissue remodeling and cellular renewal

  • Helping maintain healthy skin, connective tissues, and hair follicles

  • Supporting balanced antioxidant and inflammatory responses

GHK as a Carrier Peptide for Copper (Cu²⁺)

GHK also serves as a carrier peptide for copper, delivering this essential trace mineral in a biologically available form. Copper acts as a critical cofactor for numerous enzymes involved in maintaining healthy tissues and protecting cells from oxidative stress.  Copper serves as a critical cofactor for enzymes involved in:

  • Collagen cross-linking and structural integrity

  • Antioxidant defense against oxidative stress

  • Cellular energy production through mitochondrial enzymes

  • Maintaining a healthy scalp and hair follicle environment

Today, GHK-Cu is recognized as one of the world's most extensively studied copper peptides. Acting as a synergistic complex, it has attracted significant interest for its ability to support healthy aging, tissue renewal, collagen production, and skin structural integrity, while helping maintain resilient hair follicles and promoting healthy hair density, thickness, and overall vitality. Its antioxidant properties also help protect cells from oxidative stress, contributing to long-term hair and skin wellness.

Why Is GHK-Cu So Popular in Hair Growth?

Hair follicles are among the most biologically active structures in the body, constantly cycling through phases of growth, rest, and renewal. To maintain healthy hair growth, follicles rely on several key processes, including structural support, cellular energy, nutrient delivery, balanced signaling, and a healthy growth environment.

  • Hair Strength & Structure – Supporting collagen production and the structural framework that surrounds and anchors hair follicles.

  • Cellular Energy – Helping fuel the highly active cells involved in healthy hair growth.

  • Nutrient Delivery – Supporting the supply of oxygen and nutrients needed by growing hair follicles.

  • Healthy Growth Cycles – Helping maintain the natural signaling pathways associated with normal hair follicle function.

  • A Healthy Growth Environment – Providing antioxidant support to help maintain a healthy scalp and promote thicker, fuller-looking hair.

Researchers have observed that GHK-Cu helps support many of these biological processes simultaneously. While no single ingredient can solve every cause of hair thinning, GHK-Cu has emerged as one of the most intriguing compounds in modern hair biology.

Injectable, Topical, and Oral Approaches

As interest in GHK-Cu has grown, so have the ways people try to use it.

1. Topical GHK-Cu

Many hair serums and scalp treatments contain copper peptides. The advantage is direct scalp application. The limitation is that topical products primarily support localized exposure and often depend on formulation quality, consistency of use, and scalp penetration.

2. Injectable Peptides

While injection can deliver systemic exposure, it also introduces complexity, cost, inconvenience, quality and regulatory considerations that make them impractical for most people.

3. Oral Delivery

Historically, oral delivery has been one of the biggest challenges in peptide science. Peptides can be broken down during digestion before reaching their intended destination.

At Evolv, we believed there had to be a better way.

Why Evolv Developed EV2 Peptide™

When tissues are injured, naturally occurring GHK fragments are believed to be released from collagen. These fragments act as biological messengers, signaling fibroblasts to produce collagen, elastin, and other structural molecules needed for tissue repair and regeneration. Simultaneously, GHK binds copper and delivers this essential trace mineral to support the enzymes responsible for collagen maturation and antioxidant defense. Because free copper ions are difficult to transport and can be unstable, chelation by GHK helps provide copper in a stable, biologically available form where it is needed most. Together, these complementary functions make GHK-Cu a remarkable example of nature's own "signal-and-deliver" system for maintaining healthy tissues, skin, and hair follicles.

Inspired by this underlying biology, we asked a simple question: What if we could create an oral biomimetic platform inspired by the biology of GHK-Cu?

The result was EV2 Peptide™, our proprietary Cu Peptide Mimetic™ technology.

Rather than relying on isolated copper or conventional collagen supplements alone, EV2 Peptide™ combines:

  • Bioactive copper in the form of copper gluconate, a biologically available source of this essential trace element;

  • Marine collagen-derived peptides, inspired by the natural origin of GHK within collagen;

  • A proprietary oral delivery architecture designed to enhance peptide stability, support systemic biological signaling, and promote the efficient delivery of bioavailable copper.

Together, these components create a biomimetic copper-peptide environment designed to support healthy hair follicle function and the biological processes associated with naturally occurring GHK-Cu activity.

Supporting Hair From Within

One of the limitations of many hair products is that they focus exclusively on the scalp. But hair growth starts much deeper. Healthy follicles rely on systemic biological processes involving:

  • Cellular Renewal – Supporting the continuous turnover and regeneration of follicular cells.

  • Structural Protein Production – Maintaining the collagen-rich extracellular matrix that supports healthy follicles.

  • Nutrient Delivery – Ensuring an adequate supply of oxygen, copper, and other essential nutrients to actively growing follicles.

  • Growth-Phase Maintenance – Helping sustain the biological signaling pathways involved in normal hair cycling.

  • Follicular Resilience – Supporting antioxidant defenses and maintaining a healthy environment for long-term follicle function.

EV2 Peptide™ was specifically designed to support these pathways from within through daily oral delivery. By combining copper-peptide biology with a convenient oral format, Evolv Grow helps support:

  • Hair Density – Helps support fuller-looking hair by nourishing healthy hair follicles with a blend of copper-peptide-inspired nutrients, spermidine, and targeted botanical extracts.
